Cerro Santa Lucia and the "Castle"

Last Saturday our outing was to Cerro Santa Lucia (Santa Lucia Hill), and what we told Caleb was a 'castle'.  There is actually a castle on top of the hill (Castillo Hidalgo), but it is private, so what Caleb got to climb up to was actually a lookout spot high on this hill.  He was happy just the same.

It was definitely not a place meant for strollers, and by the time we were done Jimmy and I were pooped from hiking up and back with the kids in the heat.  Since our double stroller still isn't in working condition (waiting on one more part to fix the broken wheel... seems like an eternity) and we do so much walking, Caleb generally travels on Jimmy's shoulders most places we go on the weekends.
We had planned to go to Plaza de Armas, too (a main square nearby in the city center), but we were all too tired so it will have to wait for another weekend.

A pretty Spanish-style building at the base of the hill that houses an exhibit on Indigenous Art

Halfway up the hill there was a big, flat lookout terrace with this 'gate'

Finally made it to the last part of the climb, which was this super-steep staircase.  We took turns going up to the lookout point, and left the stroller at the base of it.

Good views of Santiago, though it was quite smoggy that day.

Meet Flat Stanley!  Those of you who are involved in the elementary education world may be familiar with him.  He travels around the world with people and reports back to the young students at home.  This was his first appearance on our trip, but hopefully not his last!
